Cheating has become a problem to literature. What is cheating? Dictionary.com defines cheating as to take an examination or test in a dishonest way, as by improper access to answers. Cheating destroys trust and it’s unfair. Why do students cheat? There are 10 top excuses why students cheat according to college students and they are:
1. The instructor assigns too much material.
2. The instructor left the room during the test.
3. A friend asked me to cheat and I couldn’t say no.
4. The instructor doesn’t seem to care if I learn the material.
5. The course information seems useless.
6. The course material is too hard.
7. Everyone else seems to be cheating.
8. In danger of loosing scholarship because of low grades.
9. Don’t have time to study because I’m working to pay for school.
10. People sitting around me made no effort to protect their work.
One most primary reason why students also cheat is laziness. The most effective way to combat cheating is to be aware of the consequences and don’t cheat.
According to ABC News Primetime schools have been subscribing to Turnitin.com. Turnitin.com helps teachers compare the work of the student’s papers to literature in its databases. “Its typically 30 percent of all papers submitted have been significant levels of plagiarism, “said John Barrie founder of Turnitin.com. Although there are many consequences students still seem to be cheating. Students need to be aware of the consequences. Depending on the teachers if the student is caught cheating the student may get dropped receive an F for the class or even get kicked out of the campus. Cheating is bad and should be stopped because it destroys trust. You can get expelled for cheating in colleges. The consequences in colleges are different than to cheat in high school. And when you get caught cheating you loose all your credibility with teachers.
Cheating is the same as lying. If you get caught you have to deal with the consequences. You also loose your teachers trust if you get caught cheating. It will be hard to gain the trust back from your teacher if you aren’t trustworthy and you get caught cheating. Your teacher will be on the look out for you all the time. They may give you a hard time and every time you turn in an assignment you will be asked many questions about your assignment. Or they may even make your semester miserable and make the course hard for you depending on the teacher. Cheating is unfair and destroys trust. Your professor wont trust you and they will always keep a close eye on you at all times.
According to the library of CQresearcher,"Cheating is at or near an all-time high in schools and colleges. In addition to cheating on tests, students are plagiarizing from on-line term-papers mills. Many educators say the intense pressure created by high-stakes tests fosters cheating by students who worry that college admission, or graduation, hangs on the outcome of a single test. Moreover, teachers are cheating too, test critics say, because test results often determine whether schools retain their accreditation, whether educators get fired or get raises -- and even whether local real estate values go up or down. Exasperated ethicists ask whether educators are doing everything they possibly can to curtail cheating and instill core values, while others think implementing honor codes in more schools and curtailing high-stakes tests might help solve the problem.” Cheating is unfair to those students who actually study hard and want to receive a good grade on their test or any assignment that is due. It’s not fair to receive a higher grade than cheaters. Cheating can be easy once you get away with it the first time. You may even think it is good to cheat since you got away with it the first time and you may want to cheat again. I believe it is unfair because you don’t put any effort in studying. In fact, those students who do study try their best to receive a good grade.
