In a letter proposed by a city council men from Kern County, he proposes “all chickens, cows, and lambs raised for veal must be allowed to be free-range.” He states that the current methods being used in these poultry houses increase the risk of catching/spreading potentially deadly diseases. He explains that the current condition in which we produce our eggs “ is not a necessity but simply a way to cut costs.” There is a bit of contradiction in this statement, he first states that it isn’t a necessity, but it seems to me in order to keep the cost low, we must continue with our current methods. He even cites the European 100% increase in cost, so it must be a necessity for a company striving to keep an afforadable price.
To further support his proposal he cites the Europeans who have passed a similar law, using them as justification or a form of validity for his proposal. To sum it up, his logic goes a little something like this,“if the Europeans did it, we should to.” This is very irrational , you can’t justify your reason just because somebody else thinks the way you do. What if the Europeans decided to go back to the old poultry methods, his argument would no longer be valid. Furthermore, if the Europeans Nations only let chickens be free- range, why does he propose cows, and lambs to be free ranged as well? According to his logic we would only allow chickens to be free range, if we're modeling our system based on the Europeans.
I propose a different solution, rather than have these animals be free-range we could possible schedule a brief recess for them. This would allow the animals to roam around free for minium amount of time, then return back to their cages. The cages themselves would be more accomdating for them, allowing for more free bodily movements. To reduce the risk of disease we could set-up a routine health check up on the chickens, to avoid any possible spread of disease.
Their could be endless possible solutions to the problem, but simply allowing the animals to be out in the open isn’t going to solve the possible spread of disease. The logic behind the councilmen isn’t reasonable, he points were not very strong he used emotional love for animal to persuade us.
